The purpose of the alignment component is to support the state in aligning the programming for emergent bilinguals with the Common Core State Standards that New York State recently adopted.
This component of the project is currently working on two different levels: (1) the policy level, (2) the pedagogical level.
At the policy level, CUNY-NYSIEB is supporting the New York State Education Department work to create Bilingual Common Core Standards that align the ESL and NLA standards to the newly adopted Common Core State Standards.
At the pedagogical level, CUNY-NYSIEB is working on the creation of materials for teachers working with emergent bilinguals that provide them tools in the incorporation of students’ home language practices into the curriculum in ways that are aligned with the Common Core Standards. There are currently two guides targeting teachers in the works to achieve this goal:
- The creation of a basic information profile of the top languages spoken by
emergent bilinguals in the state for teachers unfamiliar with these languages. This information profile will be used to create tools and resources for teachers to use to build on these home languages in ways that help emergent bilinguals develop academic achievement aligned with the Common Core Standards.
- The creation of a teacher guide that models ways of utilizing translanguaging as a pedagogical tool in ways that are aligned with the Common Core Standards.
The ultimate goal of both the work at the policy and pedagogical level is to ensure that emergent bilinguals across the state are provided with rigorous instruction that is responsive to their cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
